Hi Amy, it sounds as though starflower oil is just what you need!!
No adverse effects have been found on a breastfed infant when the mother is taking the recommended dose of 1000mg a day of starflower oil, so we'd recommend starting it straight away.
You should notice a big improvement in your symptoms within a couple of months.
But as we always say, we're not doctors on here so if you still have any doubts, have a chat with your own doctor.
Hope this helps

Hello.
I had baby nearly 6 months ago, and I assume due to breastfeeding, my periods have not returned. However, the same each month I am suffering with terrible pms - mood swings, anxiety, headaches - I just turn into a horrible person! I have been weaning off the breastfeeding recently, and now do only 1 feed myself per day. I am thinking about trying starflower oil, and am wondering if it will be ok if I am feeding this small amount daily?

Thanks

Hi Sabrina
There's a lot of anecdotal evidence for starflower oil improving skin condition, including being of some help for acne. We've never heard of it making a skin condition worse though, so we'd think it unlikely and the probability is that it would either help you or have no effect.
100 mg isn't likely to have any effect, but we think it might be worth trying the normal dose of 1000mg a day.

If you're going to see any improvement, it will be within two to three months, so if you are seeing no benefit after three months you can stop taking it.
On the other hand, if it IS helping, then don't stop or your symptoms may well return. The main thing women do wrong with starflower oil is that once they start to feel better they stop taking it.
Hope this helps, and let us know how you get on

hi, i am 35 and suddenly began suffering from hormonal acne (nodules on neck, jawline and cheeks). i was wondering if starflower oil, in this dosage would help with hormonal acne. i had been taking a supplement which contained a far smaller quantity of it (about 100mg) and did not find it to have any effect. is there a chance it would worsen my condition depending on which way my hormonal imbalance leaned?
also, how long does it take before the levels are such in my system that i can expect to experience results?

Hi Dianne, It's certainly worth a try. We've heard from quite a few women in a similar situation to yours who've benefited, but one or two who haven't, so it's a possible rather than a definite yes.
I'd suggest taking starflower oil for 3 months at the standard dose of 1000mg a day (one or two capsules depending on which ones you get) - if it's going to benefit you, it will have started to kick in by the end of three months.
If that doesn't work, then Black Cohosh is what we'd suggest. It's normally taken to help with menopause symptoms so you can see why it may be of some use to you. Check it out here
Hope this helps

Hi Rhoda,
We're not doctors here and don't give medical advice.
We've never heard of starflower oil being used to benefit arthritis sufferers. While starflower capsules will probably benefit you around the difficult times of the month, you'll find that Omega3/fish oil/cod liver oil are more generally recommended to improve heart and joint health.
This is something you can include to chat about next time you see your doctor, as the benefits of Omega3/fish oil/cod liver oil are well established.
Hope this helps

Hi Chrissey, the problem with herbal remedies is that no real scientific trials have been carried out.
There have been a few cases where black cohosh is reported possibly to have been linked with liver damage, but those reports are very few compared with the large number of women taking and apparently benefiting from black cohosh. And there's no direct attribution of the cause, just suspicions.

What we'd say is, firstly, don't take anything you're unhappy about. Whether your suspicions about cohosh are well founded or not, if you're unsure, then just don't take it as you'll never have peace of mind while you do. Just continue taking starflower oil which may well help with your symptoms.

Another thing we'd recommend is talking it through with your doctor. We're not doctors on here, as you know, but most general practitioners are very sympathetic these days to the problems the menopause can bring and also aware of supplements such as starflower oil capsules and black cohosh. See what your doctor thinks about it.
Hope this helps
