Hi Amy, it sounds as though starflower oil is just what you need!!
No adverse effects have been found on a breastfed infant when the mother is taking the recommended dose of 1000mg a day of starflower oil, so we’d recommend starting it straight away.
You should notice a big improvement in your symptoms within a couple of months.
But as we always say, we’re not doctors on here so if you still have any doubts, have a chat with your own doctor.
Hope this helps

Hello.
I had baby nearly 6 months ago, and I assume due to breastfeeding, my periods have not returned. However, the same each month I am suffering with terrible pms – mood swings, anxiety, headaches – I just turn into a horrible person! I have been weaning off the breastfeeding recently, and now do only 1 feed myself per day. I am thinking about trying starflower oil, and am wondering if it will be ok if I am feeding this small amount daily?
Thanks
Amy

Hi Chrissey, the problem with herbal remedies is that no real scientific trials have been carried out.
There have been a few cases where black cohosh is reported possibly to have been linked with liver damage, but those reports are very few compared with the large number of women taking and apparently benefiting from black cohosh. And there’s no direct attribution of the cause, just suspicions.
What we’d say is, firstly, don’t take anything you’re unhappy about. Whether your suspicions about cohosh are well founded or not, if you’re unsure, then just don’t take it as you’ll never have peace of mind while you do. Just continue taking starflower oil which may well help with your symptoms.
Another thing we’d recommend is talking it through with your doctor. We’re not doctors on here, as you know, but most general practitioners are very sympathetic these days to the problems the menopause can bring and also aware of supplements such as starflower oil capsules and black cohosh. See what your doctor thinks about it.
Hope this helps

Hi Sandra,
The short answer to your question is no, starflower oil doesn’t normally help with hot flushes and other uncomfortable menopause symptoms.
We’ve not found anything that consistently relieves menopause symptoms for nearly all women, in the same way that starflower oil does for the period symptoms.
The only supplement that works for quite a lot of menopausal women is black cohosh, so what we’d suggest is you give this a try for a few months and hopefully you’ll find some improvement.
Hope this helps, and let us know how you get on

Hi Chris, Thanks for the question.
It’s always tricky when you get around the menopause years, but in most cases where women’s mood swings and PMT has come back, we find that they’ve actually stopped taking the starflower oil capsules regularly because they felt so well!
So the first thing I’d ask is are you sure you’re taking them without fail every day, or are you a bit hit and miss?
If on thinking about it, you do find you’ve missed the odd day, then that could be your answer.
If you are taking starflower oil regularly, then we’d suggest trying double the dose to 2000mg for the middle fortnight. Try this for three months and you should notice an improvement, as a number of women have found this helpful.
If you still have problems, then we’d suggest trying black cohosh for a few months as that is probably THE most helpful supplement for ladies around your age. This is in addition to the starflower oil of course.
Hope this helps, and let us know how you get on

Hi Bev, thanks for the question.
No, the capsules contain exactly what is in the straight oil, so there’s no difference at all apart from, for some reason, it costs more per dose to buy the starflower oil on its own than to buy the starflower oil capsules.

Is taking the straight oil tinture more effective than capsules? Will try this for post menstrual lows. Can highly recommend reading Dr John Lee on his research on natural progesterone, great for all ages.

Hi flo, thanks for the helpful comments.
There haven’t been any scientific tests, but we have heard a number of women say that starflower oil has helped them conceive. So it might well work for you too.
There’s no need to take any other supplements with it, just take the regular dose of 1000mg a day, preferably from one of our recommended suppliers so you know you’ll get good quality.
Starflower oil can take up to three months to have its full effect, but most people start noticing an improvement in their monthly symptoms after a couple of weeks or so.
Let us know how you get on. Hope this helps.

Been trying to conceive for 6years,was taking EPO + Flax seed oil, but wanted something that would just be only one as cycle not regular and was told to try SFO. Do I need to take it with anything else?

Hi there
Many women put on a bit of weight over the change for no apparent reason other than hormonal changes, so you might have to eat less and/or exercise more to keep your weight down.
Evening primrose oil and starflower oil won’t help reduce your weight, but regular starflower oil even after the change could help you feel better and even out your moods.
We recommend that people don’t bother with evening primrose oil, as it has exactly the same active ingredient as starflower oil , but less of it.
Hope this helps

Hi Michelle, that’s an interesting question. It should be perfectly safe to take 2000mg if you think it helps – indeed we know several women who take 2000 for a week or so each month as they find it helps with their very worst spells.
There haven’t been any proper clinical tests on it, but my own view, for what it’s worth, is that just because 1000mg works, it doesn’t follow that 2000mg works twice as well. It may be (but I don’t know) that with PCOS, you’ll never get to have a cycle like women without PCOS, and that 1000mg – the normal dose – gives you all the relief you’re going to get, and it’s just the way it is.
By all means try taking 2000mg for a while if you want and see if it makes it even better. But if it were me I’d be tempted to leave well alone and stick with the 1000mg and settle for the benefits it gives over life without starflower oil.
Or why not have a chat with your doctor about it when you next go in and see what they think. Most doctors now are aware of the benefits of starflower oil capsules and should be able to offer some helpful advice.
Hope this helps

Hi Trudy
We’ve never heard of starflower oil linked to gaining or losing weight. I’d have a word with your doctor about your weight problem, and he/she should be able to help.

Hi Stacy
The short answer is yes.
One of the nice things about starflower oil, apart from making life liveable for so many women, is that it has no known side effects and no known interactions.

Hi Amanda, thanks for the question.
Start taking them straight away. The effects of starflower oil capsules usually take a few weeks to build up, then settle to a constant level at which most people find the benefits quite substantial. It’s important though to remember, when this happens, to keep taking the capsules, as if you stop because you’re feeling better, the symptoms may return.
On your other questions, no scientific studies have been conducted, so we can’t say. But there is anecdotal evidence that taking starflower oil may help some women to conceive.
Hope this helps. Lesley, Starflower oil staff.

Hi SJ, thanks for the question.
There’s no real evidence that starflower oil helps with conception, though I have heard it from a couple of people who say they were trying to conceive for years, then started with starflower capsules and conceived straight away.
Whether this is coincidence or not I’ve no idea, but I wouldn’t offer starflower oil for that purpose.
I can say though that it wouldn’t do any harm and women of childbearing age would practically all benefit from taking regular starflower oil – in terms of mood swings, PMS symptoms and so on. So you’ve nothing to lose by it. I’d give it a try. Sorry I can’t give you a “yes”, but hope this helps.
